There are seasoned marketers out there who have huge, monstrous mailing lists. Many of them carry their lists on their shoulders, much like a Generals epaulets displaying the serious Brass that signifies Rank.
However, under scrutiny you will find that whenever they mount a campaign, the response from their list is slack, with extremely low conversions. Quite frankly not the kind of conversions to expect or aspire for.
Then, there is an entirely different breed of Marketer whose lists are not necessarily gargantuan. Now don’t get me wrong I have nothing against huge lists. In fact I absolutely encourage the building of big, big mailing lists, especially responsive ones. Well these Marketers on the other hand send out the very same campaign to their list and the response is overwhelming with conversions going through the roof.

Why are the disparities in response there? Why are the disparities so stark and so clear? These are but some of the questions that the owners of these unresponsive lists should be asking themselves and by extension so should you, unless of course you have a super responsive list.
An unresponsive Mailing list is something that dogs many Marketers, seasoned ones and Newbie alike. Although to varying degrees. This problem can be traced to one major attribute.
In the first example, if you were to take that list apart you would find that, the huge mailing list is populated with dead and cold prospects, who are clearly in the majority. Then the ones who do respond, do so out of courtesy if anything else. The ones that are lukewarm are fast on their way to becoming cold or dead with every passing Campaign and Broadcast. The only reason that the list is big, is because list building is a constant process and this huge list has been built over time. Why is this so? The reason, is the relationship the owner of the list has with his list.
It is important from the onset when building your list, to realize and understand that you are dealing with real, flesh and blood people. Who have feelings, fears, biases, likes, dislikes and aspirations. The only reason that they are on your list in the first place is because, they have a problem which they feel can be solved by being on your list. Or, they have seen some benefit which they stand to gain by being on that list.
The way you treat your list is the way your list will treat you. What you put into your list is what you will get out of it. If you treat your list shabbily then it is obvious that your list will respond in the same way. It will therefore, be no surprise or wonder, if people on your list start un-subscribing.
I do not need to go into details on how to treat your list from the onset, but the overriding guideline should be; That you are in this business primarily to help people achieve whatever it is that they want to achieve online. Making money from this should be secondary and not vice versa. Only then will the saying that ‘If you help enough people achieve what they want; Then you, will achieve what you want’ will hold true for you.
